What is NBS?

The Government’s approach to performance management requires local authorities to measure their performance and, more importantly, their improvement. Local government is the major investor of public money in sport and over 60% of their net expenditure on sport is typically on indoor sports facilities. Sport England's NBS is for sports and leisure centres with main halls and/or swimming pools. It has created authoritative performance indicators and national benchmarks for these key local authority sports facilities.

Sport England and the NBS abide by the European Benchmarking Code of Conduct, with which all participants in the NBS are expected to comply.
